Brasserie Lipp

by Weekend In Paris

Okay, so every restaurant is NOT a winner!

Here’s what I think about my least favorite restaurant in Paris so far…

Locals were seated downstairs by a super nice host, but this table for two was rushed upstairs like we had leprosy and then were ignored at every turn. We noticed a trend in who was herded to the upstairs – Brits and Americans.
The wait staff made a committment to ignore us and we would have walked out except that it was raining heavily and we were tired and hungry. It is clear that they don’t care about abusing foreigners because they cater to their local clientele.
The only redeeming thing about our experience was the dessert. With so many interesting cafes and places to eat in the 6th arr. I would suggest you skip the Lipp!

Hi Priscilla,
Just saw your response and in answer to your question I do have a gem of a restaurant that I always go to when in Paris, its called Le Congres Mailott. I always eat there at least twice on any of my visits. Its a little out of the way but just a stroll down from the Arc de Triomphe. As a matter of fact if you go to Bois du Bologne its right there and that is a wonderful park to visit. I have been also after going on top of the arc at dusk and that is a wonderful experience also, love to see the Eiffel Tower from up there and the sun setting on La defense and the grand arc.
There are so many great places to eat when in Paris and I haven’t found that you can go too wrong I have a lot of places I look forward to going back to and new places I plan on trying this year.
Happy Travels, Rodney

We were 4 Women-Of-A-Certain-Age, so obviously
American we might as well have had the Stars & Stripes
tattooed on our foreheads…….seated at the Lipp by a stiff
by anyone’s standards maitre de…..on the main floor no
less. Prepared for an uncomfortable meal, we were
pleasantly surprised by a friendly & very accommodating
waiter. Everything we had hoped for in a server. He may very well have been dismissed that very day for “behavior unbecoming a French Waiter”. But ours was a happy experience. BTW, add to your list of restaurants Au Pied de Cochon….it’s a wonderful restaurant.
a bientot….
p.s. aren’t Girl Trips the best?!?

I love Lipp !! I ate there twice on my last visit to Paris, November 2011. I loved the ham and lentils. I enjoyed the fact that it was a local spot and not a tourist trap. it was fun dining with all the Parisian families on a Sunday afternoon. The wait staff was very nice even though we didn’t speak french, and there is no english menu at this brasserie. I was seated downstairs on both occasions. And this place was mentioned in “Midnight In Paris”. The deco inside was great too, very charming.

Hi Rodney,
Thanks for taking the time to read the blog and chime in. If you have any other restaurants you enjoyed, please pass along to us. I am so glad you had a good experience at Lipp! That is good for you, but I experienced what many others did too. Trip Advisor has over 200 reviews and here are the unbiased reviews which more reflect what I experienced. Please see below.
Of the 200 responses here’s how they would rank it:
54 “terrible”
42 “poor”
34 “average”
45 “very good”
29 “excellent”
That means that over half of the people rated it average or below. If I owned this restaurant I would be making some serious changes. There are so many wonderful restaurants in Paris, this place is not worth the risk.
Cheers,
Priscilla

So relieved that I missed it! We did the tourist/Hemingway/A Moveable Feast thing at Café des Deux Magots around the corner and they were great. I did not run into what you describe at Brasserie Lipp at any of the places we went.

Good valadation Trish that Paris is a great place for tourists to take in the culture and have a great time! Glad that you did not visit the Lipp for any lip from the only snooty waiters in town! Any recommendations for the Gal pals?
